Sekisui House attends COP23 in Bonn Germany

by Sekisui House on 30 03 2018 in Global news

The 2017 United Nations Climate Conference took place in Bonn, Germany from 6-18 November. Organised by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) brought together the world’s nations to discuss plans to speed up climate action and goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

Sekisui House was invited to present at the SDG11 Day held on 13th November 2017 as a result of our advanced achievements in popularising net-Zero-Energy Houses in unprecedented quantities in the private sector globally.

The presentation by Vice President Iku of Sekisui House uncovered the factors behind the success of our mass introduction of net-Zero-Energy Houses. These included long-term vision setting on decarbonisation, through to how we shared targets and how to achieve them with internal teams such as sales, engineering, design and production, and external teams such as suppliers, contractors and government.

What is SDGs?

The word ‘SDGs’ is the abbreviated name for Sustainable Development Goals adopted at the United Nations Summit held in September 2015. SDG consists of 17 goals and 169 targets and includes topics such as environmental destruction, infringement of human rights and poverty. It is unique in that it clearly defines the significance of roles and involvement of not only governments, but also businesses. This is in alignment with Sekisui House’s “Sustainable Vision” that has been set since 2005.

Japan Pavilion

A symposium themed as “Structural changes for decarbonised societies - Role of business, local, and national governments” was held in the Japan Pavilion of COP23 which was attended by Mr Masaharu Nakagawa, Japan’s Minister of Environment. Sekisui House was the only private sector participant at the symposium and was asked to present. Sekisui House Vice President Tetsuo Iku introduced our achievements in net-Zero Energy Houses and actions on decarbonisation in the domestic sector which garnered a high level of interest through many questions raised by the representatives from countries around the world.
