Sekisui House Australia takes its first net zero energy home to auction; announces charity partner

16 June 2021

Sekisui House Australia is taking its first net-zero energy home to auction on Saturday 19th June, 2021.

Aptly named “SHINKA House” [Evolution in Japanese] is located in Gledswood Hills, and is the company’s first net-zero energy home in Australia. SHINKA House has provided a blueprint for other net-zero energy homes that Sekisui House intends to further develop as a volume offering locally. Its design and construction marks a significant milestone for energy efficient housing in the country, with the hope to demonstrate how such insights may be materially and sustainably delivered to collectively improve the life and comfort of current and future generations.

SHINKA House was created using cutting-edge technology and materials, delivering a highly functional, comfortable, and energy efficient home. It sets new standards in sustainability, achieving a thermal comfort rating well above the National standard, scoring above 8 stars. In 2020, SHINKA House was the winner of the HIA NSW Spec Home of the Year Award.

SHINKA House is a truly unique home by any standards both in aesthetics and function, with Mayor Cr Therese Fedeli noting it was exciting to have such a revolutionary home built in the local community, supporting more sustainable, healthy, and connected communities.

Craig D’Costa, General Manager at Sekisui House, commented: “Sustainability is ingrained in Sekisui House’s foundations globally. We have delivered more than 57,000 net-zero energy homes worldwide. It was clearly a natural progression for us to establish a roll out of higher performing homes within our flagship Australian masterplanned community – The Hermitage at Gledswood Hills.

“We see SHINKA House as the first of many net-zero energy homes that we intend to offer to the Australian market.”

Building a stronger community

Sekisui House has partnered with Blue Wren House Camden Women’s Shelter and will be donating $50,000 from the SHINKA House auction to the local charity.

Blue Wren House is dedicated to supporting women and children in need of accommodation as a result of domestic and family violence (DFV) through their Shelter.

Tanya Whitehouse, Deputy Co-Chair, Blue Wren House, Camden Women’s Shelter commented: “The costs to run Blue Wren House every year are over $420,000. With the cost of providing shelter for women and children impacted by FADV being so high, sadly more than one in two women are currently turned away from crisis accommodation.

“We are very thankful to have support from Sekisui House to contribute to the operational costs at the new Camden Women’s Shelter on land provided by Camden Council. This generous donation will ensure we can provide support to the community’s most vulnerable,” Ms Whitehouse said.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli commented: “Blue Wren House Camden Women's Shelter is one of many incredibly worthy local charities we have here in Camden, so I am proud to support this initiative.

“Camden Council continues to have a zero tolerance to any sort of violence and we’re excited about our continual involvement in the development of the refuge. The shelter will provide crisis accommodation for up to five women and their children in the Camden area, as well as a client-centred case management plan.”

Currently under refurbishment, the Blue Wren House Camden Women’s Shelter is due to open in November 2021. It will be a shelter for women and their children who are leaving domestic violence and are at risk of homelessness.

Mr D’Costa added: “This is a hugely important cause that Sekisui House is proud to support. We strongly advocate creating and nurturing safer, more liveable communities for Australian families today, tomorrow, and in the future.”
