Stage 2 of Parramatta Light Rail Set to Power Ahead
31 January 2026
The Minns Labor Government has authorised the start of major works for Stage 2 of the Parramatta Light Rail, marking a significant step toward delivering a new connection between Greater Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park.
Construction on the 10‑kilometre extension is set to commence in early 2027, fulfilling a key Labor election promise. The new line will introduce 14 stops and serve the communities of Camellia, Rydalmere, Ermington, Melrose Park, Wentworth Point and Sydney Olympic Park.
This corridor is among the fastest‑growing in Sydney, and Stage 2 will play a crucial role in supporting new housing supply—particularly in areas like Wentworth Point, where development has outpaced the delivery of public transport.
While the former Liberal government repeatedly committed to advancing this next stage of light rail, no construction ever began.
In the coming weeks, the NSW Government will start procurement for Stage 2a, which covers the section between Camellia and Wentworth Point. More than 2,000 construction‑related jobs are expected to be created through this phase.
The Main Works package will include:
- 4.5 km of new track
- A new bridge connecting Camellia and Rydalmere
- Nine additional stops
- Expansion of the Stabling and Maintenance Facility
- New light rail vehicles
With $3 billion invested so far, Stage 2 will connect seamlessly with the existing Parramatta Light Rail line, which now moves up to 90,000 passengers weekly.
Alongside procurement activity, the project team will continue early works such as site investigations, utility design, and property acquisitions.
The enabling works for Stage 2—the first phase of the project—are already progressing. This includes piling for a new active and public transport bridge across the Parramatta River, which will be the first built in more than 35 years.
Since taking office in 2023, the Minns Labor Government has accelerated the planning for Stage 2, finalised the business case, and secured all required Federal environmental and NSW planning approvals.

Minister for Transport John Graham said:
“Labor committed to delivering Stage 2 of the Parramatta Light Rail, and today marks a major step forward as we prepare to put the Main Works contract out to tender.
“Connecting Parramatta with Sydney Olympic Park will finally deliver the public transport link that has been needed for years—one that was repeatedly promised under the former Liberal government but never delivered despite significant growth in population and housing.
“This government is focused on building the infrastructure that supports new homes and provides Western Sydney residents with alternatives to sitting in traffic.”
Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said:
“Authorising Stage 2a Main Works is a major win for Western Sydney, supporting emerging housing precincts at Melrose Park, Wentworth Point, Sydney Olympic Park and Carter Street.
“Extending the network to Sydney Olympic Park will unlock new opportunities for employment, recreation and, importantly, bring reliable public transport to communities that have long gone without it.
“In its first year, Parramatta Light Rail has already transformed how people move around our city, giving residents and visitors a genuine alternative to driving.”
